St. Lawrence County "Recognition Celebration"
Sat., Feb. 9th, 9:30 am to 11:30 am
We served some light refreshments (banana and cranberry bread, fruit salad, coffee, tea) and everyone seemed to really have a wonderful time.  When we went around the room and gave people an opportunity to say how they feel they are benefiting from their involvement with the program, MANY nice comments were made.  One student (Guohua) said that her tutor (Barb Evans) "brought color into her life" and Barb responded that it was "the nicest thing anyone had ever said about her".

JCC Walk/Run for Literacy
On Monday, September 24, 2007, Jefferson Community College students joined in a walk/run for literacy in honor of Dr. Carole McCoy’s Inauguration. Dr. McCoy is the newly appointed president of JCC.

Almost 100 students (some bringing babies and even a dog) donated supplies to be distributed to local literacy programs. This was the admission fee and Literacy of NNY was chosen as the recipient to give out the items. There were books, pencils, notebooks, highlighters, crayons, markers, knapsacks, and many more items. Literacy of NNY will give these supplies to other literacy programs, non-profit agencies, students and their children, anyone who can use the writing supplies.

Kenyon Wells and De Ette Marshall did a fantastic job organizing the event and Literacy of NNY is very grateful to have been chosen to receive the supplies.

Lewis County tutor In service
Several tutors attended this event. It was a chance to meet some of the other tutors, share ideas, and learn
about new policies, material, and
theory. In response to the questionnaire, tutors expressed a need to feel "networked". We are planning to have more In service sessions and meet bi-monthly for informal social sessions. Some of the other issues discussed included the photocopier, materials, motivating a student, and  homework. Any copies can be made at the Watertown office. Just call in your request and they will be sent. The Watertown office is available for any assistance - copies, materials, etc. Call 376-8188 (calls are forwarded) or 782-4270.
