LNNY's St. Lawrence County Annual Recognition Event ~ Saturday, January 28, 2012

On January 28, 2012, St. Lawrence County held its annual “Recognition Celebration”. We celebrated the improvement in skills of the 14 students who attended and recognized the hard work and dedication of the 14 tutors who came. The delicious potluck brunch was enjoyed by all, as were the violin selections played by 9 year old Veronica, the daughter of one of our students, Seon Ah Park.

Lewis County Children's Book Drive ~ At the Elks Club in Lowville, on December 21, LNNY gave out over 700 books to needy children. Board members Sally Gordon and Betty Sawyer joined tutor Linda Higby and former tutor Sandy Ebersol to bring cheer to the children. Thank you, ladies!

 

LNNY's Salvation Army Book Event ~ On December 21, 2011, LNNY staff in Jefferson County gave away over 1000 books for all ages to families coming to receive food and gift baskets at the Salvation Army in Watertown.

Literacy of Northern NY Children’s Book Drive another Success!

Lewis Book Drive 2011

Lewis County residents once again showed their generosity by donating 556 children’s books so far. Kandi Smith (TOPS Assistant Manager) and Sally Brennan (Literacy of Northern NY Lewis County board member) stand beside the book collect ion box at TOPS in Lowville while showing some of the wonderful books that Lewis County children will be given at Christmas time. Literacy of NNY sets up a table at the ELKS club each December and gives out the books to needy children. The collection box will remain at TOPS until the end of November so if you have books to donate, you can drop them off at TOPS. Literacy of Northern NY is grateful to TOPS for allowing the collection box in its store.

Cream Cheese Festival 2011:

Literacy of NNY participated in the Lowville Cream Cheese Festival on Saturday, September 17 and had a table once again. We had five raffle baskets. The new basket this year was a Lowville business basket with gift certificates and gifts from local businesses in Lowville. Board member, Sally Brennan did a fantastic job of contacting businesses to collect the prizes. Betty Sawyer and Sally Brennan helped with set up. Throughout the day, Cynthia Lonsbary and her husband Andrew worked at the tables with Betty, Sally, Cecilia and her husband, and Ellen Anderson selling raffle tickets and promoting LNNY. Inger Curth and Ellen, dressed up as Cat in the Hat and  delighted children passing by the LNNY table.

Lewis County Children's Book Give-a-way, December 2010

Board member, Betty Sawyer, had help from Donna Dolhof (tutor), Sandy Ebersol (former tutor), Sally Brennan (tutor and board member), and Linda Higby (tutor)helped to give out books at the Elks Club in Lowville. Thank you to all of these great volunteers. They set out the books on two long tables and grouped according to age. The volunteers were great at speaking about the books and encouraged parents to take several books. In all, they gave out 500 books.


Salvation Army Children's Book Give-a-way, Jefferson, December 2010

Jefferson Community College collected 1061 books at its annual drive. The Brock family sorted and put stickers on the books and helped delver them and bring back any leftover books. Cecilia gave out 824 books. Another 150 books went to Amy, who is starting up a daycare center.

Lewis County Children's Book Drive

Literacy of NNY collected over 250 children's books this year, many thanks to manager, Candy Smith, at TOPS grocery store, for allowing LNNY to place a box there. These book will be distributed in December to needy children from Lewis County.

Once again, children flocked to Flower Memorial Library to meet the  Cat in the Hat, listen to stories from Dr. Seuss books, and partake in the refreshments. LNNY thanks Karin M. for her delightful reading and Inger, who returned to charm the children with her singing. Photos

St. Lawrence Recognition Celebration

St. Lawrence staff, tutors, and students met on January 23 to celebrate the dedication and hard work of everyone. These events are always enjoyable because everyone brings a dish to share. Barbara and Anne presented certificates of recognition to tutors and students.  Photos


Children's Christmas Book Give-a-way

Once again, Literacy of Northern New York distributed children's books at the Salvation Army in  Watertown at Christmas time. This year, Literacy of Northern New York gave out children's book in Lewis county. VISTA employee Claire Wakefield and Board Member Betty Sawyer set up a table at the Christmas Share event at the Elk’s Lodge. The program is sponsored by Lewis County Opportunities. In both counties, LNNY gave out over 1000 free books to children.


Lowville Cream Cheese Festival

Volunteers, staff, tutors, students, and board members staffed the Literacy of Northern NY booth at the Lowville Cream Cheese Festival on September 19. Literacy of Northern NY extends special thanks to Cat in the Hat personalities, tutor Linda H., and her student Miss R. Literacy of Northern NY collected $430.00. from the raffle ticket sales. The book drive has been so successful that LNNY has collected 648 books to date and Claire is still counting. Photos

On October 1, the Jefferson ELL class went on yet another adventure, this time to the Wakefield Apiary, affectionately known as "The Honey Farm." The AmeriCorps Vista volunteer at LNNY, Claire, along with her mother Amy, gave the group a special tour. Photos
