Meet some of our learners
Literacy of Northern NY is proud to celebrate the accomplishments of its students and the tremendous effort they put into their studies. To show appreciation, LNNY hosts recognition luncheons for each county and LNNY also presents certificates of achievement for course completion, goals achieved, and sometimes just because a student has been outstanding or has tried very hard. Each month, LNNY chooses a student to honor.

Student of the Month
February 2012
January 2012, Jefferson County Maira's photo
Maira, the "Snow Bunny", visited from Brazil for two months and stayed with her cousin, Erika. She attended three LNNY English classes and had a tutor and managed to find time to visit Niagara Falls and take ski lessons. This was her first experience with snow. She improved her English language skills and fluency.
December 2011, St. Lawrence County Jennifer's photo
Jennifer works with tutor, Odile LaComb. Jennifer has improved both her reading and math skills in the 6 months she's been working with her tutor. She especially enjoys reading about history, and lately she's been exploring historical letters from the past 3 decades. She is thinking about possibly getting a job someday, and she went to the Labor Department to take an aptitude test. The results showed her skills might be most appropriate for a conservation worker, a food technician, an account clerk, a postal clerk or in food preparation. She works hard on her homework and then brings in questions about things that are confusing or difficult for her. Her enthusiasm is outstanding; she is always early for her appointments with her tutor, and she really looks forward to their time together.

Ilie, from Romania, studied US citizenship preparation with tutor Nancy Van Deusen. He successfully passed the test and was sworn in during October. Ilie also comes to the Tuesday ESOL class. Congratulations Ilie!

In June of 2011, Rose was re-tested and went up in both math and reading levels. Sadly, Rose had to say goodbye to her tutor at the end of June because she was moving to Florida. She plans to continue her studies there and asked for information about local literacy affiliates.

Michael M. has been working very diligently to improve his reading skills, and his hard work is already paying off. His skills are definitely improving and he is able to figure out words that previously were too hard for him. He has unusual persistence and motivation, and his positive attitude and enthusiasm make it a pleasure to work with him.
January 2011, Jefferson County Johanna's photo
Johanna came to Watertown from Colombia two months ago. We call her "Snow Bunny" because she is so enthusiastic about learning English that she walks to class twice a week and also meets with a tutor. Although this has been her first experience with snow, she quickly learned to make the best of the cold weather and bought the appropriate warm winter clothes.
